He depends on China - his most profitable Tesla factory is there. He hasn't had any significant business dealings with Russia. He tried to buy ICBMs from them decades ago but they jacked up the price and laughed at him, leading to SpaceX designing their own rockets instead of dealing with the Russians. In his echo chamber (former co-workers from PayPal - David Sacks and Peter Thiel) Russia is still a major player on the world stage and every time Putin threatens nuclear war "it's for real this time"

They’re self-subsidizing cheap launches through equity raises. It’s not a sustainable situation, at all. Therefore, it’s pretty far from “the best”.

Who is better (and certified and ready to go, even disregarding matching SpaceX on price)? The alternative is hiring Russia again for our launches to the ISS... isn't going to happen.

but the only thing that’s gotten them to where they are is continual cutting of corners in quality, design, and service

Take a step outside the echo chamber...

service: No one else actually comes within a thousand miles for service. If I need service I just open the mobile app any time of day or night, request service, select the times/days that work for me, and they reply within a few hours of business hours. Most times they just come to us to do it. What ever the issue is, is fixed on the first visit. Our last Honda was in multiple times for the same issue, but they could never fix it (speedometer would randomly die... which meant it was under-recording mileage, so we weren't too too concerned)

quality design: 2014 Model S and then 2018 Model3 are the best cars we've ever owned (compared to our past cars - VW, Jeep, Subaru, Honda, Ford, Dodge, and the various rental cars we've driven over the years). I haven't comparison shopped recently (not in the market for a new EV) but range price quality wins over the US competition. I was looking in Hyundai EVs a year ago but the US dealers were marking them up $10k. Was just thinking earlier today that I hope Rivian got into smaller/sportier cars (other than trucks and SUVs) so we'd have more actual options in the future
