Why do states other than Iowa have such high real estate prices?

Here in Iowa, you can buy a decent house for $20,000-$50,000. I splurged and bought a three-bedroom, 1,600 square foot house for $73,000 with appliances included.

I have relatives in California and Colorado, and I am shocked at the house prices there. It's like ten times the price. What are they doing, putting gold dust in the drywall and pouring diamonds in the foundation when they build those houses?! Any explanation or elaboration would be appreciated.
