Why did Garfield change his mind about Subaru passing the trial in Emilia's place after the first time Subaru died? The first time Subaru left the sanctuary to return to the mansion, Garfield told Subaru to take the trial in Emilia's place. Then Subaru died, said he would do the trial in Emilia's place, and Garfield rejected the idea.
Was it the witch's scent? Was it because Subaru voiced the idea instead of Garfield arriving at the idea instead? I tried searching online for any article, video, or Reddit discussion about this but couldn't find any. There are zero results for "why did garfield change his mind" on Google, which I find surprising.
