Hey all, just wanted to start a conversation with people who either speak more than one language or are studying a second language! Feel free to use the languages you know or even find a study buddy who's learning the same language.
I speak English natively but in Canada we learn French for a couple years in elementary school and then in my high school (this was 1999-2003) we could choose between Spanish, French, or Japanese. I took two years of Spanish.
Japan has been on my bucket list since I was 13 and I've tried soooo many times to learn it but it's one of the most difficult languages. I recently decided to give it a more honest try and since October I'm trying to really dedicate myself to it. I'm working with a few different textbooks, using Wanikani to learn kanji and vocabulary, and I use an app called HelloTalk for conversing with natives. I highly recommend it for any language learner; it's basically Facebook between your language and the language you're studying (ie I see posts from Japanese people studying English). My Japanese is toddler-level but it's getting there.
