It took 7 years for doctors to diagnose me with Lupus back in 2018, due to conflicting blood work and test results depending on when there's a flare up or inactive state, and because it’s frequently mistaken for other diseases.
It's an autoimmune disease of which the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues that can lead to organ impairment/failure - most commonly the heart, lungs, and kidneys. The tendency of flare ups can make daily life unpredictable. My flare ups usually consist of fever, fatigue, brain fog, rashes, body aches, nausea, and joint pain. Although there's no cure, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and slow down the progression.
One common symptom is a bright red rash on the face that runs from the bridge of the nose, under the eyes, and across the cheeks. Due to its resemblance to a butterfly, it’s known as a “butterfly rash.” Moreover, the color purple is associated with Lupus as it’s the combination of red (representing motivation) and blue (signifying calmness).
Hence, the purple ribbon and the butterfly are symbols for lupus awareness 💜🎗️🦋
