The truth was never hidden, but people are instinctively lazy and it's easier to avoid it sometimes than it is to accept it.
Education and gaining knowledge are also hard, so people generally avoid having to invest in pursuing a higher level of understanding.
Peer pressure also plays a role. It's hard to defend the truth when all the lazy people around you have bought the lies.
