How the heck do you keep your matte lipsticks lookin' fly on your lips?!

Alright, so I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything in the search tab. :-/

Since I have recently been blessed with some awesome matte shades for my lips (THANK YOU SECRET CUPID!) I am dying to know how ya'll keep them looking moisturized and not cracked out. I do use a lip exfoliant, but I feel like after about 10 minutes of a matte shade being on my lips, the lipstick settles into my lines and it looks SO bad. Should I be using a primer? I really really want to love the look, but I can't be sitting at work and then go to smile and the color looks like THIS Help!!
