This is my last weekly offer for my favorite month! Here's Week 1, Week 2, and Week 3!
This week I'm offering these super cute illustrated cards in a very cute size! Halloween isn't really a big thing in the Philippines. As a kid dressing up for Halloween mostly meant maybe going to the mall in costume to ask for treats at participating stores. It was a different story for super rich exclusive neighborhoods, I'm told. They apparently really go all out. What is a bigger deal regardless of socioeconomic status is All Souls Day on November 2 when folks go in hoards to the cemetery (many traveling back to their hometowns) to pay their respects to their dead loved ones. My cousins and I collected candle wax balls left from melted candles lit on the graves and told each other ghost stories. The local channels were also replete with stories of ghosts and malignant entities that we heard every year but still scared the bejesus out of us each year. I've had many a nightmare fueled dream because of these shows and the cemetery ghost stories.
As queer adults, my friends and I will gather for Halloween aka "gay Christmas". This is what we (and many others in our immediate community) call it because this is the time when lot of us are able to freely dress up in ways that are normally shunned or policed and we gather with our found families to have fun. Folks in my found family aren't big party-goers so Halloween usually means game night in costume! We usually have really silly themes so it's always a fun night. This is of course not a widespread practice in the broader local queer community as socio-economic status does come into play here. So there is privilege in being able to dress up or in even to have a found family.
If you'd like to claim this offer:
- In the comments tell me about your most memorable Halloween memory! It can be anything from frightening to hilarious as long as it was memorable for you. If you observe something other than Halloween around this time, I'd love to hear about your memorable moments about that too!
- Be flaired or have posted a thank you in the last month.
- Comment the country you live in.
I'm only able to go to the post office once a month. Barring any unforseen complications, I'll be dropping these off on October 31st. :) They should be handstamped with that date as well.
I'll leave this up for a few days and close it when I've chosen folks to send to!
Thanks everyone! 🎃 👻
