Hi!
My birthday is coming up next month and I've sent way more cards through this sub than I've received, so here's my first ever request!
I'd be happy to receive any card from you but here is an optional writing prompt:
What are your ideas on how I could make the most effective positive contribution towards making the world a fairer / more equitable / better place?
I'm happily employed as a mid-career software engineer but sometimes wonder if there's an opportunity I'm missing for how I could better make use of my skills to help with humanity's big challenges such as:
- climate change (it seems "obviously" true to me that a price on carbon is the only feasible way to make effective progress here but it seems frustratingly difficult to put that into practice / achieve the required popular support)
- the extreme inequity of opportunities and good health outcomes (avoiding Malaria) available to people based on where they happen to be born
- inequitable access to good health is one of the main drivers of overpopulation and other inequities such as economic advancement, education, ...
- the growing problem of antibiotic resistance
- science denial and the misinformation epidemic
If you have any ideas or suggestions for concrete steps I could take and how that would help make the world a better place, or alternatively what steps I could take to discover such ideas, then I'd love if you could share them with me.
If you want to send me a card, please comment below and include a comment on whether or not you still need my postal address. Note: The address that I'll give you is with a mail forwarding service and I'm not sure yet whether I'll keep it open beyond March 3rd, but that should be more than enough time to receive your card. If I've already given you my address in the past (e.g. if I've put it as a sender address on an envelope I sent you) then you can instead use that one, it is still valid.
Thanks in advance for any card that you choose to send me. I'm thrilled to be a member of this community.
