u/StephanieTay x60!!!
Thank you so so much for all of your postcards, stamps and other extras! I've been holding onto them and the number I've received from you has only grown in the past month or so! This will sound random, but I'll reply to your postcards! I'm also planning on sending others the blank postcards that you sent me!
I can't decide on a favourite traditional kueh. Firstly, I have to divide them into savoury and sweet. I like soon kueh and lapis sagu (layers peeled, not bitten!!!), ang ku kueh... so many more!! (Yes, I'm Teochew, haha!) And the delicious looking satay stamp was amazing! Honestly, the number of food stamps you have makes me super envious!! Actually, I don't really eat ice kacang much, because it's very sugary from all the syrup. If there's 1 thing I like, it would be the green jellies, haha! I like chendol. The deep, smokey flavour of gula melaka is so so absolutely important in it!
This is another contentious one, I like epok epok, not the Chinese curry puff, which I find has skin that's too thick, haha!
Yesssss, the king of fruits is the king of fruits!! So if I could choose mooncakes, one of them would be snowskin mooncakes with MSW/durian filling!!! There are durian stalls, but only at certain places. Lately, I think there are some that only have online shops though.
I feel like there are lots of stalls that do random pairings with nasi lemak, so to me, otak otak wouldn't be too strange, I guess. I usually just go for the cheapest available one, but I usually choose to not have the fried fish because I worry I'll eat the bones and they'll choke me to death!
I'm quite curious about Borneo and how it differs from the rest of West Malaysia. As a child, I visited once and remember there being lots of these fairly large bugs at night that I thought were really cute!
I've actually gotten quite used to wfh. I don't need to get up an hour early for my commute to work and can work in actually comfortable clothing. I also love being able to shower right after work ends and not having my hour commute back home. Yes, it's hard to meet friends, but that would only be a problem if I were even meeting them to begin with!
Lately, I've been putting some of the cards that I really like onto a large whiteboard and I've found that it works for me. Since you move a lot, maybe you could laminate a few that you like and use them as placemats for your plates? And yes, I know who your flatmate is now!! I just happened to have an offer and he responded to it, haha!
I do hope that things are manageable for you and it isn't too stressful, although it's hard when we're still essentially in a pandemic and trying to live with it as an endemic. I was shocked to hear about the many things that you had gotten over the past year!!! I do hope you're doing a lot better now!
I love those snack postcards so much! From the snacks on the postcards, I have great memories munching on muruku ikan and I'm also very very fond of pringles. I can finish an entire can by myself in 1 sitting!! ShoyueMi is another snack that's really easy to find myself just chomping on without thinking. I can't tell you 1 snack that I love because I just love snacking so much!!
My first school uniform was this blue dress that was really stiff. Even though I wore it and washed it regularly, it just would stay stiff and quite uncomfortable. I always preferred the PE uniform, which would be a t-shirt and shorts. Must more comfortable and far cooler than the dress.
I really like the postcard of the postman, especially because it looks like a stamp because of its edges! The postmen here come on motorbikes and I sometimes can hear them when they come! You know when you were young and heard the sound of the ice cream man with the bicycle bell that he'd ring? That's me now with postmen!!
When the first few postcards with states flags came, I was a little confused, because they didn't come with the card that explained who they were from or what they were, haha! I can't believe the states actually have corresponding stamps, that's so amazing! Do you remember all the flags and which states they belong to? I doubt I can even remember that many flags off the top of my head!
I'm somewhat familiar with the two shop layouts, although I'm not sure I've seen either in person. I feel like I've consumed media that showed them since it's so hard to see such traditional places in current Singapore. If I were to visit Malaysia, since I really like walking around areas that have shophouses, I'd want to go back to Penang, although I would want to visit other places, like KL, Melaka and Ipoh first (quite typical places, unfortunately!).
