Dear u/inflammammal, thanks for the beautiful vintage postcards you selected for me ! I love all of them, they are so unique! :)
Niagara Falls from below by illumination: Stunning postcard! Amazed to hear that Niagara Falls still projects coloured lights onto the falls nightly. There is something very poignant about that kind of continuity of more than 100 years!
Pulpit Rock on Mound, Platteville, Wisconsin: Interesting Rock formation! (and thereâs a Pulpit Rock in New South Wales ( NSW ) as well!) But somehow couldnât find much info about the Platteville one online.
Along Azalea Trail in the Moonlight, Lafayette, La: Gorgeous postcard! The moon, the clouds, the azalea trail! And a cottage in the background. Feels so tropical.
Bridge over Indian Creek at 41st Street, Miami Beach, Florida: Lovely to see a coconut palm in the foreground and the bridge over Indian Creek. I googled it up and enjoyed looking at other views of the same bridge ( at 41st street.)
The Arena, St. Louis, MO: Beautiful building! I had ( obviously) never heard of it, but loved reading about the âold barnâ ( as it was called later ) which was sadly demolished against public objections in 1999.
Old St. Louis Cemetery, New Orleans, LA: Apparently there are three Catholic cemeteries forming the Old St. Louis Cemetery! All of them with above ground vaults. Couldnât figure out which one this postcard image belongs to, but it was interesting to read and see additional pics of these historic cemeteries.
Tesuque Indian Pueblo, Near Santa Fe, New Mexico: Gorgeous postcard, and equally interesting to read about the Tesuque Indian Pueblo! Definitely would love to visit Santa Fe and the various Pueblos!
East River Drive, Showing Sutton Place, New York: Beautiful view of Sutton Place enclave; I looked up some current views and seems like itâs not changed all that much. Imagine living in New York with such open vistas!
Spanish Arms Patio, New Orleans, La: Looking up online, it seems this pretty wrought iron gate was known as âThe Wishing Gateâ and the courtyard inside is the âGreen Orchid Patioâ. Apparently this âCreole â style building and the one next door were constructed by a Dr. Isidore Labatut In 1831. (The building is also referred to as 616 Royal Street, in the Vieux CarrĂ©, French Quarter, New Orleans.) Seems like the building is still in existence but the contents have been moved elsewhere. From the description on the postcardâs back: âIn the olden days, lovely Creole belles passed through the beautiful old gates to the spacious reception rooms of the second story.â Fascinating. :)
Travelers visit the Grand Coulee Dam, Washington: I love the perspective view of this post card. Can imagine how the dam must have been perceived when it was constructed. âIn the "Ballad of the Great Grand Coulee (Grand Coulee Dam)" Woody Guthrie most eloquently celebrated the governmentâs role in harnessing a "wild and wasted stream" in order to make life better for "the farmer and the worker, and all of you and me."
