How do the Demotions in Siege actually work?

I'm a relatively new player (121hrs spend into the Game) and have just hit Level 50, along with completing my placement matches. I got ranked Gold 4.
I then proceeded to play another Match, lost the match and instantly got demoted to Silver 2. Today I played 2 Matches, lost both of them and got demoted into Silver 4.
Can someone tell me why you get demoted every time you lose?
