ROM is already more than two years old (and much older CN server) and two of its most iconic game modes - WoE & WoC, are in my opinion, becoming boring and stale. Not even mentioning the always recurring lag issues.

I have a few proposed changes to fix this and make WoE & WoC more exciting.

War of the Emperium

  • Retain only 1 Castle per City, and only 4 castles per Channel.
    • This should limit the number of people per channel.
  • Castles should only be 1 map, and not three floors.
    • This will eliminate loading time advantages and disadvantages. Please be considerate to the ones who do not always have the latest device.
    • Redesign the map to favor defenders, where respawn points can't just be blocked off easily.
    • The maps should at least be able to easily hold one defending guild, and up to three attacking guilds.
  • Perfect Defense should be adjusted to 30 minutes, but the timer should not be reset if the Emperium is not broken.
  • Add an additional way of breaking the Emperium by "capturing" it.
    • Turn the Emperium box into a capture zone.
    • The Emperium can be "healed" when it is not under attack, and there are members on the capture zone.
    • This should prevent unrelenting chip damage, and promotes coordinated break attempts.
  • Retain the concept of "defense streaks".
    • Increase the rewards of holding a castle by 1 tier per week, with four reward tiers.
  • Give same tier rewards to victorious attackers.
    • When the castle goes to a new owner by the end of the WoE period, they will get the current tier reward but it will go down by 1 reward tier.
    • The castle will have to be defended the following week in order to increase the reward tier.
    • This allows attacking guilds to reap the same rewards as defending guilds.
  • When a castle gets abandoned at any time, its rewards will get reset down to the lowest tier.
  • If a castle remains unchallenged for 4 more weeks after attaining tier 4, they will be getting double rewards until the streak is broken.
    • When an attacking guild manages to conquer it, they will get double rewards for that week as well, but the streak will be reset, and the reward tier will still go down by 1.
  • There should be some sort of leader board on which castle remains currently unchallenged the longest, and which guild currently has the longest streak.

War of Crystal

  • Remove Team Sun, Moon, and Star.
  • Add an actual WoC Ranking System.
  • Base the matchmaking on the guild ranks, per batches of four.
    • Batch 1 = Rank 1, 2, 3, and 4.
    • Batch 2 = Rank 5, 6, 7, and 8.
    • Batch 3 = Rank 9, 10, 11, and 12.
    • When a guild fails to secure a castle, they can still attend WoC, but they will drop down by 1 Batch. Guilds can drop down up to two batches per week by not securing a castle, and placing 4th for that week.
  • Base the movement of guilds between batches based on their performance during that WoC period.
    • 1st Place = move up to higher batch
    • 2nd place = 2nd in current batch (i.e. Rank 6 in Batch 2)
    • 3rd place = 3rd in current batch (i.e. Rank 11 in Batch 3)
    • 4th place = move down to lower batch.
  • Give BCC Rewards for top guilds for WoC. Make the players who have spent money feel that they are getting some of it back, and the free players to have access to BCC through hard work.
    • Rank 1 - 100 BCC per member
    • RANK 2-5 - 50 BCC per member
    • RANK 6-10 - 25 BCC per member
    • RANK 11-50 - 50 BCC per member
  • Members of the top 50 guilds should also be able to distinguish themselves through a cosmetic character frame that shows their guild's rank.

Discussion

  • For WoE, guilds that prefer to defend, and guilds that prefer to attack will be getting the same rewards, depending on the risk that they want to take.
  • These changes will actually give players actual bragging rights because their achievements will be available for everyone to see.
  • An actual ranking system will lessen toxicity. Facts will always trump anecdotes.
  • Monetary rewards in the form of BCC are a very small token of appreciation from the developers to give back to those who have probably spent thousands of dollars to earn their guild a spot in the rankings.
  • It may look like pocket change to others, but earning a few BCC every week for my F2P guild mates through hard work and dedication will go a long way.
  • These changes will give a fresh look to old mechanics and keep things more exciting and balanced,
  • The changes on Rankings and Rewards will also help immensely with player retention, and may renew everyone's sense of purpose and competitive spirit.
  • ROM is one of the best games I've played in a very long time, and in my opinion the best spiritual successor of RO Classic. Of course it is not without flaws and imbalances, but such is the core of the freemium game model. I have no other wish for the game but to last as long as possible.
