How do I collect stuff underwater with the shark always on me?

I have about 5 hours of play time and have crafted everything I can with what I can find above the water. I killed the shark once but he keeps eating my raft before I can get over to stab him quick enough. Watched some YouTube videos about collecting stuff underwater but nothing about what to do about the shark
