So we ended up with a rescue bunny and are trying to be the best bunny parents we can...but we still have questions!

Okay first off, some backstory. I'm going to try to condense it as much as possible. We live in small town, and our neighbors down the "street" (really its an alleyway dividing the two streets but whatever) had these two pet rabbits they kept outside. They escaped all the time, but the owners would always go get them. Until one day they didn't. They free roamed together for a couple of weeks before one "went missing" (I heard a stray cat found it) and the other just kept doing her thing. That went on basically all summer before my fiance and I decided enough was enough and finally caught her. We were afraid she would end up like her friend or when fall and winter came she wouldn't know how to survive the elements without a hutch or people caring for her.

Anyways, we have taken her to the vet, she is a girl, about a year old, and we named her Watermelon. We bought her a two-level hutch and let her get used to us outside, since it was where she was used to living, before we moved her inside. We're working on the money to get her spayed and really don't want to stress her with another car ride so soon again anyways. We feed her some pellets, as much timothy hay as she'll eat, and leafy greens everyday. She has plenty of things to chew on and we sometimes give her carrots, at the vets suggestion for her teeth. She loves timothy hay biscuits and carrot yogies.

So questions!

  • We know bunnies can be nervous about hands and pets, but she seems almost terrified. We have gotten into a routine of pets for "cookies" (trying to teach her a word for the biscuits) and she looks for the biscuit after. But she just still seems so nervous. Will she ever get used to being pet?
  • Will we have to trim her claws? I should have asked the vet about this, I know! And if so, is it better to do it at home or take her to a vet or groomer?
  • I try to get her out of her hutch to explore the kitchen and stretch her legs and she is absolutely not having it! She just gets low to the ground sniffs around a bit back to her hutch then hops back in and won't leave (this was before I realized I really, really should not pick her up unless its absolutely necessary, not that I was a ton before. I've done it like 4 times total and once was the vet.) If we open her hutch and try to get her to come out into the kitchen she'll come to the door but won't come out. What gives? I know she needs the exercise and I thought they were suppose to be curious and territorial little beasties. She can't free roam 100% of the day because we have resident senior cats I've had since they were kittens but I can shut off the kitchen for her and would love to do so if she'd just come out.
  • Really just anything else you think new bunny parents should know!

Edited to add: we've had her for just over a month. :) Not that anyone's asked but I thought I'd add, her hutch does NOT have a wire floor :)

Thank you all so much in advance!
