Since getting a rabbit, does anyone else look on in horror when cartoon magicians pull a rabbit out of a hat by it's ears?

I mean I know it's not real but now I wonder where that stereotype comes from. Did real people handle rabbits by their ears? All that weight pulling against those sensitive ears?
Or am I overthinking it and going stir crazy with the lack of social interaction with people over the age of 14?
