Greetings Rabbit Redditors! I'm new to this Reddit (don't know why I never thought about looking for a bunny one!) and am excited to chat with fellow bunny moms and dads!
Now, I fully expect to be tut-tutted for what I'm about to explain, but please know I'm not a horrible/unknowledgable fur mom! Quite the contrary, I am constantly doing my research. However, sometimes you have that odd duck (or in this case, rabbit) who just wants to defy the laws of nature...
So. Meet Meeko. He is a year and a half old Rex, who (long story short) I rescued from a breeder who was selling buns under the age of eight weeks at my local flea market.. which as we know, is illegal. (And of course, local authorities chose to do nothing, despite the recorded evidence I had. Sigh.) Anyway, Meeko is spoiled rotten. He also thinks he's a dog... because his brother is one!
Now, when I first got him, Meeko was kept on a strict 'rabbit-appropriate' diet, as he ought to have been. All was well and good, until he was about two months old and realized... hey! Brother's food is pretty good. Maybe I'll steal some of that. And no matter what mom did to try to keep bun out of it.. someone wasn't happy, be it Meeko or Chief (my beagle.) I work from home, and my office was where Meeko lived at my last place. (He is free-roam during the day, and put into his 'room' at night.) It was attached to my kitchen, gated off with a cute little picket fence gate. Tried putting the dog's food in the kitchen instead of the office (had it in there as beagle has separation anxiety and is my constant shadow, but that's another thing entirely lol), which resulted in a devious little bunny chewing on the gate/managing to get through the pickets when he was smaller. In addition, once I had removed the dog food, determined to put an end to this bad habit... Meeko decided to stop eating -period-. Obviously, that's not a good thing since rabbits need to keep their GI going, so I reluctantly had to give in.
And so, to this day, Meeko has defied every God-ordained rule about rabbit diets, and leads a very happy life. Vet hasn't seen any issue with him, and he has been content to eat his crazy variety of hay, greens, dinnertime rabbit pellets... and dog food. And all was well... until we had to move. While this was Meeko's third move and he had always adjusted well before, we had an unexpected crisis when we discovered that we could not get his custom hutch up the new house's stairs and around a tight corner into my bedroom, where he would be living. Thus, we had to make due for a while with an old dog crate of Chief's until we were able to set up my walk-in closet as a bunny bedroom. Meeko was not happy about any of this transition, and we dealt with some fun "I have decided to no longer use my litterbox" tantrums. After he was moved into his new home, he settled back into the litterbox habit... but I've noticed he's not been very interested in any sort of greens I've offered since. This is rather unusual for him, as he's always been a fan of his greens, and knows to eat them promptly (for fear of his big brother stealing them!) But lately... no interest. And I've tried a variety of his usuals, plus some new stuff that he hadn't ever tried before. If he feels so inclined, he may accept a tad of kale, or a bite of carrot. But this is nothing, as he used to scarf greens down.
So now I'm a bit concerned. His diet is awful, and I do realize that... but to change it dramatically now could throw off his gut flora and send him into stasis. But before, at least he was getting his greens in and was balanced in a strange way. Now this lack of interest has me worried that it might cause some problems later on.
Despite this, he seems to be his happy pain-in-the-butt self (if you've seen Disney's Pocahontas... well -- there's a reason his name is Meeko.) So I don't think this is an illness issue... but I don't want it to GET to that point, you know? So basically, all of this to ask: any ideas on how to get an ornery bunny to eat his greens? Or maybe some particulars that your bunny just can't resist, that Meeko might find the same way? He is (usually) a fan of kale, green peppers, spinach, cilantro, cucumber, and the occasional carrot or apple slice. Tried mint lately, hoping he might be interested in the smell.. but that was a big no. And things are just going bad in the fridge because he's not showing interest in them. sigh
SO that's my long-winded introduction/situation. Again, I know -- bad me. But my bun is happy... and I want to make sure he does stay that way. So any suggestions about getting him to eat his greens again would be most appreciated! :D
Binky on!
