We have had Koni since we got her from the shelter when she was 5 years old with another rabbit she had bonded with. We adopted the pair because they were just so sweet and had their own little personalities. We've had them both for 2 1/2 to 3 years. I knew the time would come, especially not knowing her health history with her previous owners or her actual age beyond an estimate. But I'm not ready!
Trigger warning, some of this is graphic
Last year Koni developed a limp. We took her to the vet ASAP. They did x-rays, diagnosed her with mild arthritis. They gave us a short round of metacam and she was great for awhile!
A few weeks ago she was having a very hard time getting around suddenly. She would randomly lose control of her bladder. We got her into the vet right away. The vet gave us more metacam, this time not a temporary dose. She also said it seemed she had some hip displasia. We got home, got her a lower box she could go to the bathroom and made her hay more accessible.
The medication helped for a few days, but when we came home from work one evening she could barely get around! She still perked up and tried to greet us but wasn't able to be very mobile. Phone call with the vet suggested we split the dose day/night. That helped a lot!I even saw her hopping in and out of the high sided litter box.
Few days later, my wife was giving her meds and noticed 2 of the nails on her back leg had fallen off!! Quick and all. We made another appointment. At this point her mobility hadn't gone down from the improved state her medication provided.. The vet examined her, told us it seemed infected and gave us antibiotics. We're not sure if it was infected, then the nails fell off or if the nails fell off because she was dragging/limping and it got infected afterwards.
Koni had what seemed to be a seizure on the table at the vet!! She got up and seemed to be okay afterwards. It was terrifying. I thought I was watching her die. The vet said since she wasn't showing many signs of pain, besides the limp, that it may be a nerve issue as well and prescribed her gabepentin for the seizure and nerve issue.
She seemed to be maintaining after this and the toe swelling has gone down a bit, but I noticed today another toenail fell off! This whole time she has struggled more and more to get in positions to groom herself and scratch her ears. We use a damp cloth to clean her paws when they get dirty (if she allows it). She has lost some weight since her checkup last year as well. But she has been eating and drinking for now. After I noticed the other toenail, I noticed she is struggling even more to get around. She has to take lots of breaks and is definitely limping more. We have another appointment soon to check the status of her toe infection soon, but the vet pretty much said what we're doing now is to make her comfortable.
This whole time she has been energetic as she can be with limited mobility. She's still happy to see us and usually comes up to us to greet us or perks up when she can. Until now, she's definitely a lot lower energy. I know some of that is the gaba. But it's happening so fast. I feel awful.
I keep wondering if I did something wrong. I feel like I took good care of them, but I keep wondering what I could have done differently. They have been free roam since we got them. But I wonder if our carpet was bad, or if I could have noticed any signs sooner.
I just want more time with her... I feel so bad now too because poor Hatt will be left without his mate.
I love her so much, she is such a treasure to our lives. Her personality is so unique, she's always there to chin rub my hands or my face, and she's such a sweetie, and has always been very inquisitive and curious about everything. Bossy too!
Thank you for reading my vent. I'm really sad rn
Here's some of my favorite pictures of the lady in question
