I mean...I don't know what I expected, but christ on a bike.
- inconsistent worldbuilding
- incoherent plot
- insufferable ship forcing
- inexistent action
Ruby randomly runs into a space looping stand of trees then nothing else is subject to that same issue. If you referenced even one more instance of Alice in Wonderland style geographic fuckery you'd be in the clear, but they didn't. It's completely out of place.
What happened in this episode that matters? Moves whatever the plot is forward? Why are they still going to that plateau now they're all reunited with laughable ease? Why did they reference yang trying to solo that one monster down an arm, but apparently Weiss and Blake are afraid of it with full power and weapons on hand?
I don't wanna talk about how stupid that scene is. You know.
Where. Are. The Fights!?!?!?! CRWBY had 8 goddamn seasons to establish who these characters were and nobody is watching but devoted fans and people pirating. Stop butchering establishing shots and haul ass to kicking some ass. Y'know, the roots of the show and the only reason anyone ever looked twice at it.
This episode was roughly 18 minutes long. Serialized children's tv, adult cartoons what have you, run for about 22 minutes, and in that time they manage on average one self contained conflict/obstacle, one instance of individual or group growth, and anywhere from 1-4 reasonable length fights. I guess all that happens in the 4-5 minutes extra they get though, and CRWBY just could not for the life of them fit any of it in.
I skipped volumes 7 and 8 because I was lucky enough to catch wind of just how terrible they were while I was bumbling my way through the rest of the show. I had no expectations for this volume, and yet somehow I still feel let down.
