Would you be interested in a book about the probabilities of dice mechanics?
Post Body
I am a mathematician with a passion for RPGs (and I am writing my own, think Dungeon World with a side of wargame).
I read in the weekly post someone lamenting the fact that there is no good book explaining the statistics behind various dice mechanics, and I have the expertise necessary to write that book. I just want to know if there's demand.
This is the structure I envision:
- Introduction, basic probabilities and how to calculate them
- Example: the classic DnD d20 mod roll-above
- A short discussion of how probabilities translate to game feel
- Analysis of a few representative mechanics: PbtA's 2d6, Call of Cthulhu's d100 and Fate's 4dF and why they're fundamentally the same as d20
- Dice pool systems, with roll many and count successes
- Custom dice: the Genesys system
- Some self-important conclusion about how RPGs are really just a sophisticated version of Yahtzee
Does this interest you? What other dice mechanics should this book cover? What else should it talk about?
