DC vs Opposing Rolls

Post Body

Iā€™m having a gameplay issue involving how should DCs be used appropriately for different situations. While comparing to contesting rolls. Is there are a way to balance between the two or should it be focused on one or the other.

Iā€™m using a d20 for these situations. The DCs are used for lifting objects, avoiding traps or trying to fix or activate devices. While using contesting rolls only if the player is facing someone or creature.

Comments

I've seen a few versions of contested/opposed rolls where both roll against the same TN, if only one succeeds then they win, if both succeed or both fail, then either you reroll, or the attempt just fails, or whoever rolled highest (or lowest) wins. This also works well for roll-under systems, where your skill level sets the TN.
