Player Autonomy in Games

Iām working on a few new games, and I have been working with my own assumption of what player autonomy means, but I am curious what other designers and players define that term as. Mostly curious to see if my own thoughts are too restrictive and if I need to broaden my understanding. Thanks for the input.
