Within the last week, I've received two postcards labeled "official election mail": One from the secretary of state's elections division, and one from the registrar's office for my county (Los Angeles). The address is correct, so I know it's not being misdelivered, but the name is incorrect. I am the only one who lives at this address and I have not recently moved. I have also not recently changed anything about my voter registration status.
Here's the weird thing. The name on the postcards uses my maiden name (I am divorced, but haven't changed my name back yet) in the middle name field. It is an extremely uncommon name, so I don't feel like this is a coincidence. In fact, my maiden name is so uncommon that the only people who share it are relatives of mine.
The postcards are addressed to (I'm using a fake name here for visualization purposes) Angela McMaiden Smith. "McMaiden" is my maiden name, but also this person's middle name.
I called the county registrar's office and they marked "Angela McMaiden Smith" as invalid, so I should no longer get any mail for her. I also checked my own voter registration, and it is still valid and all the information on file is correct. But the name thing weirds me out so much. Could this really be just a mistake, or is this evidence of some sort of identity theft attempt?
