We had a series of bizarre events happen tonight on our street and we’re trying to figure out what next steps (if any) should be. Appreciate any advice. Below is first a description of everything that happened and then questions I have, so if you’re more a technical expert who doesn’t care about our story skip to the bottom.

Events: 1) Tonight (Easter Sunday, 8:30pm) we heard a knock on our door. Went to the door and no one was there. We have a (very visible) ring doorbell and it showed a youth (best guess 18ish but could have been 17-22) knock on door and take off running, passing a car parked across the street whose door lock lights flicker as he gets near. I have teens myself so my first thought was a stupid prank of my kids’ friends. I go out and talk to a youth standing at the car in question (not the kid in the video). He says he saw it happen but it wasn’t him. I can see a person looking at me from inside the vehicle. I don’t know what to think but also it’s a ding dong ditch not a mass murder so I respond “ok well no harm done” and go back inside.

2) my neighbor has security video showing that this car appears to drive off but then instead of leaving they u turn in a driveway and come back. At that point, they approach my neighbor’s house where they mill around in the driveway for quite a while like they’re trying to decide what to do. There is conversation on the recording but it’s unintelligible.

3) My neighbor notices them and comes and chases them. Her kid takes a clear photo of their license.

4) They come back to the neighbor’s house 2 hours later and are still roaming around. Neighbor comes out and they leave.

Questions:

1) are there good options for finding out a vehicle owner from the plate?

2) are there good options for cleaning up the audio from a security cam recording? (Ring)

3) any theories about what these kids were after?
