AusPost: What happens when you use the wrong postage?
Post Body

Good morning!

Does anyone know what happens when you use the wrong postage in Australia for international mail? I found some old forum posts that suggest for domestic mail AusPost still deliver the letter but send a card to the recipient or return address asking for the extra postage, but I’ve never had such a card or a single piece of mail returned to me (and I’ve had plenty go missing), so I’ve always been a bit suspicious that they might just disappear instead.

Specifically, I asked at my local if I could use Christmas card stamps on postcards, and they said yes. So I sent a bunch. And then my partner went to get a stamp for a Christmas postcard and a different staff member at the same post office said it had to be in an envelope to use the card only rate. So I found the PDF guidelines and it actually does specify that they need to be in an envelope, and the maximum weight is 20g, which I’ve definitely exceeded by 5g or so with some of my cards, and evidently by 1–2g with the 60 holiday cards I sent 😩

I know I could just wait and see but I’m impatient so I thought I’d ask if anyone has experience or insight.
