October is my favorite month. It's not because of the beautiful weather or the vibrant colors. It's because there's no other time in the year that has so much to look forward to. There's Halloween and then Thanksgiving and then Christmas. And it's not the holidays themselves that I particularly love, but rather the lead up to them. The feel of the weeks and days preceding. And here we are, in early October, with everything yet to come.
This time every year I seem to write on Reddit. Going back four years, I first joined in the thick of my divorce. I was a mess. I distinctly remember looking forward to nothing. There was no tomorrow other than the one on the calendar. It was just dwelling on yesterday and trying to survive today.
Now I appreciate today. And I look forward to tomorrow.
I look forward to going to the gym later. I look forward to getting my haircut. I look forward to using that free smoothie coupon. I look forward to wandering around my town this weekend. I look forward to having my kids next weekend. I look forward to finding some fall festivities to take them to. I look forward to beating them in the new Mario Party game coming out. I look forward to celebrating my daughter's birthday. I look forward to going to New York City for my birthday. I look forward to meeting up with my best friend there. I look forward to getting a normal-sized Christmas tree since I've moved to a bigger place. I look forward to slowly but surely wrapping too many gifts to put under that tree for my kids. I look forward to the week off I take every year around Christmas to spend time with them. I look forward to my 40s being my happiest and healthiest decade. I look forward to making new friends and more. I look forward to the mistakes I'll make and the lessons I'll learn from them. I look forward to feeling it all.
And if you're here reading this feeling like I was four years ago, I look forward to you looking forward to things again. Because you will- even if you can't see it today. Just keep moving forward.
