I once read a beautiful quote that ended with “I am orchids and moonlight” that I loved and resonated with. Someone dear to me hear that and said “nah, you’re more like dahlias and moonlight” as they knew that dahlias are my favorite flower. So here’s a mediocre poem I wrote at 1am depicting how I often compare myself to the beautiful summer babes when I forget that I have my own kind of beauty.

“She comes in like a breath of fresh air Innocent and sweet, full of promise She’s a summer breeze Complete, warm, and without a care.

She smells like daffodils and sunlight Her skin olive by its kiss Salt water embraced yellow hair This is her time of year al’right.

Her brown eyes will capture your heart With little flecks of gold, like her freckles Her infectious laugh ignites your soul And it hurts to think of ever being apart.

A midsummer rose made to bring joy To stand in her presence- it’s intoxicating She’ll always been the light you crave The type of happy that can’t be destroyed.

And there there’s me….

I am the quiet settling fog on an early morning The smell of birch and sandalwood The very essence of a crisp dawn A red sunrise that heeds a warning.

I am the midnight garden that whispers Sweet seductive words to fill your ears Before your reach out and pluck your fingers On my thorns that leave you in whimpers

I am the violent storms in the night The thunder that resonates with your soul The electrifying sense of desire and urgency That you dare not try to fight

I am not a perfect flower in the afternoon light I am alabaster, haunted, and serene She may be daffodils and sunshine But I will forever be dahlias and moonlight.”
