41 [M4R] San Francisco/online -- Reality hunger.
Author Summary

Post Body

I think that life is messy. I aspire to tolerantly endure – and to work with and within – this never-ending, ever-evolving messiness.

It's a work in progress. And then you die. :p

Looking for platonic friends first and foremost, for conversation, walks, hang-outs in parks, etc. If that develops into a romantic attachment (with a woman), very good. If not, also lovely.

I'm six one, straight, glasses-wearing, on the nerdy side. Single, no kids, never married. Not inclined toward polyamory. Ideologically, I'm inclined toward socialistic politics, neither Democrat nor Republican.

I'm not a 'genius' or a 'savant,' I have learned to my sorrow (I have limited capacity to pick up foreign languages; not much of a head for facts and figures; a slow reader, etc.) yet nonetheless have a cerebral, intellectual side, which means, at times, I enjoy talking about things I don't know very much about.... So, yeah, if you're into that, we could be rogue, uncredentialed intellectuals together :p

Thus, on any given occasion, you might find me holding forth with very shaky authority on political theory, sociology, 'critical theory,' theology, psychoanalysis, and so on, often under the influence of the latest podcast episode I listened to....

One of the concepts I've been harping on for a while now (from sociology, I believe) is 'atomization': increasing isolation and fragmentation, 'bowling alone,' the 'friendship crisis'...Cool stuff (he said, ironically).

The topics I know most about are all associated with literary and film culture and are in the end, I've grown to feel, over the years, more trivial than not. I've ended up with graduate degrees in both English and Film Studies, for some odd reason. (Put it down to a misspent youth. What I wouldn't give for some practical skills, like knowing how to fix a toilet.)

On the other hand, I like to think I'm serious and playful. I saw written on the sidewalk recently: "Whatever you do...play" and could only nod in agreement. Being light of heart is a difficult, serious art. I exalt the trivial, the silly, and the whimsical. I'm a pretty solid fan of Bob's Burgers (the long-running tv show). My religion is pigeon. (Yes, the actual birds.) ;)

I prefer raising questions to having to give answers. A habit of thought which probably translates to a serious character flaw, namely indecisiveness. Ah well. They say our strengths are bound up with our weaknesses. Everything's a package deal. (Free wisdom, y'all! :p)

My thoughts and feelings regarding the internet are ever-evolving, but at this time, speaking solely of and for my own inclinations, I like to bring embodiment to it as much as possible, as far as meeting people via the internet goes: if you live nearby, I want to meet in person at some point (sooner rather than later, because later has a way of slipping into never); if you live faraway, I at least want to meet via video chat to get an idea of who you are in real, three-dimensional space. Hiding behind the screen comes with certain advantages (like the ease with which heavy, 'confessional' material can be broached) which are simultaneously disadvantages. (Everything's a tradeoff.)

The downside of wearing a cloak of invisibility, in my experience, is it ultimately 'de-realizes' the relationship. It becomes a way of avoiding the above-mentioned messiness of human life. It makes it less 'real.' Whatever 'real' means. I don't have a handy definition of 'real' in my hip pocket at the moment, but perhaps you get the idea, and that's why I've attached a photo of myself to this post.

Looking for people who are more patient, more thoughtful, more kind, than not. Realizing, of course, that we are all deeply imperfect, inconsistent, and self-contradictory.
