Throat mics?

I'm curious about the viability of throat mics for radios. After doing some searching, the general consensus seems to be that cheaper throat mics are garbage but not much beyond that.
Are they worth consideration or is it pretty much a specialized tool for a very narrow and specific use case?
It'd be nice not to have the boom mic on my headset there all the time if I'm not using it.
