So I have a tax bill that I need to pay and was looking into whether it was worth using a 3rd party to help make the payment to earn some points (eg B2Bpay or Sniip).
I looked at B2B pay as I do have an ABN as a sole trader, although I have not made any money with it in a while.
If using B2Bpay, you need a Qantas Business Rewards account, which requires an ABN.
B2Bpay fees are 1.2% using VISA/Mastercard. This can be claimed on deductions but I think its only classified as a business expense, and due to not trading with the ABN I don't think I'd be able to claim on this unfortunately. You get 1 point per $7 spent to the ATO. B2Bpay is also offering 30% extra qantas points until the end of May and an additional 10,000 points when spending over $50,000.
So, my tax bill totalled $5198.25.
I have 2 CC's currently, ANZ Platinum & NAB Premium. Both earn points up to $3000 then reduce the amount over $3000. ANZ has a better earn rate overall.
I ran a couple of scenarios through ChatGPT and come to the following conclusion.
If I paid $3000 using my ANZ card and then the remaining $2198.25 with my NAB card they would earn me 3,715.5 points. Add an additional 742.6 points for the 1 point per $7 and then 30% bonus with B2Bpay that is 5794.75 points. The 1.2% on the total is $62.38 (NOTE: I forgot to add this to total points calculation, which should be an extra 42 points).
1 point ≈ $0.01087
So is it worth it? Probably not. at 1c a point. I don't think its terrible, but I think the money its just better in your pocket.
What are your thoughts?
