Trouble with SMS unread notification on Android.

So when I get the push for a SMS on my computer, and respond to it the unread notification on my phone ( OnePlus: One ) will not go away, no matter how many times I go view the message thread. I have to manually delete the messages people have sent me to get rid of the lock screen notification of unread messages.
Any help would be appreciated.
( If it matters, I'm using Hangouts as my sms client )
