First off, sorry that this is in English, my Spanish is very limited. Iām a 34 year old guy from New Jersey with a Puerto Rican father and a black mother. I only āknew ofā my father growing up and didnāt meet him and get to know that side of my family until I was 12. Our relationship has been spotty since but we still communicate. My mother never tried to hide that side of my heritage from me and got me books about PR and itās history and we even went to the island when I was younger. However, I have my motherās last name so no one would know that part of my heritage on paper but in person strangers seem to assume I speak Spanish (at my job in a hospital, for example). My question is: Since I was raised almost exclusively with my motherās side, is it still ok for me to say Iām Afro-Latino, attend the parade in NY or even have a flag on my rear view mirror?
