I’m a recent grad with a degree in advertising / PR. I also did a certificate in professional writing. Here are the relevant things, past present and upcoming, that are/will be on my resume.
1.5 years undergrad internship doing social media for a non-profit
Currently completing a six month internship doing communications at a theme park company
Participating in a local org’s yearly public service project providing public relations support for a charity event. So far, I’ve written one press release but I expect to write a couple more, write media advisories, possibly pitch media and build media lists (possibly because there’s always the chance these tasks will be taken by someone else — I’ll try and snag them)
A good friend of mine is releasing a short film later this year. I’ve agreed to help him with social media strategy and pitch his film to critics and film influencers.
My worry is that I simply don’t have much media relations experience. In college, I accepted the social media internship because it was the only opportunity available to me at the time and I stayed once it became a paid position because all the PR internships were unpaid and I couldn’t commute 30 minutes without a car. I’m worried I’ve trapped myself in a profession I don’t particularly care for.
What do you all think?
