Until six months ago I worked as a reporter at a news agency. I loved being a journalist, but the place I worked was literally dysfunctional and also I had a toxic colleague who was bringing me down.
So I left for charity PR.
But now after six months I’m bored. We have a lot of pointless meetings about all of the work that needs to be done, leaving no time to do the work, there’s been so much turnover that there’s been no clear process put in place so my time is being taken up by admin rather than utilising my skills. It’s left me wondering if I made the right decision.
I’ve communicated my frustration to my manager, who was brought in after me and I had to train? Which, if it was a colleague on the same level I’d be fine with but surely the recruitment should have been done the other way around?
Essentially my issue is that my head has been turned by an opportunity at a friend’s PR firm which would also encompass public affairs and politics which I also have a background in.
I’m meeting them to discuss it soon informally but should I give my current employer more of a chance before I jump ship again? For all the charity is a bit all over the place, they’re lovely people who’ve invested in me. What would you do in my situation.
The agency would be about a £10k pay rise.
