I am looking to change careers from working in media and public sector work, to PR. I'm in my mid 20s and live in the southern US. I am legally blind, and due to glaucoma I'm not really sure how much longer my usable vision will hold, but I'm confident I can remain employable given my skillset. Over the last several years I have worked in a variety of jobs, one of which involved English language reporting on China that had me utilizing Mandarin language skills on a daily basis. Another role saw me writing copy for a small hospitality company. The biggest hurdle I can see is that right now I am living in the rural Deep South, with very few job opportunities outside of low paid hospitality work. I don't have the money to move, and I would need a relatively high salary to afford living anywhere around here due to the lack of public transit. I am looking into PR work, because it feels like an industry where my copy skills can be put to good use and my language knowledge might be an asset.
When I have brought this up to my vocational rehab couonselor, they dismissed the idea.. they keep suggesting I go into low paid hospitality work or get a job with a call center. I will be getting screen reader software, and already use Windows narrator a fair bit to check my writing work, but is that a real hindrance to a PR firm? As long as the copy fits the client's/company's needs what does it matter that I used a screen reader or something?
Regarding moving, since I know that'll come up: I am happy to move out of here, I just need the funds to do it. I maybe have $900 to my name after paying medical bills, and can't borrow from family. I would love to get out to Charlotte or back up to DC where I used to live, but the math has to make sense.. I can't live like my early 20s with $100/wk in spending cash.
Thank you for providing any advice you can, I really appreciate it.
