Ever steal a wizards root acess? It's meant to describe drugs or special roots that contain drugs. Also is part of a riddle or word game involving hacking. Ancient wizards knew about hacking and acted accordingly. If you were to get root access in a computer system you would essentially have deep control over that system.
Psychedelic plant roots is one interesting possibility at least.
