PT: "Write this down!"

Don't bullshit a bullshitter, right? I had a really scummy, manipulative interview recently that a I (unfortunately) pegged correctly early on as not truly a "marketing" position, so much as a begging for donations for "charity" inside a Costco or Walmart, etc.
Anyway the interviewer/"owner" of this "business" conducted a surprise group interview and every other beat was, "write this down!" And it was bullshit information.
So what is this psychological trick? Obviously it's a scam, but what is the buy in with writing down information? Is there any connection or am I over reading the situation?
