Working in the UK as an overseas Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Post Body

Hey!

I am currently a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist trainee in Central Europe. In my country, similar to many other european countries, it is possible to choose this speciality as your primary one after medical school. In the future, after I finish my speciality training, I am planning to move, preferably to an english speaking country, therefore UK could be one of my preferred destinations.

I tried to research the available future routes for an overseas specialist, but I have concerns and questions:

  1. The UK CAP training includes a heavy load of general psychiatry training, whereas my program minimises it to 3-12 months which could be a problem when determining the "comparability", however this comes with the advantage that most of my training is about CAP itself (around 4 years of CAP training in the 5 year total training). Official sources claim that MRCPsych is not mandatory but "can be used to evidence the attainment of core capabilities"... in core psychiatry. Does this mean if I pass MRCPsych, then the core psychiatry training difference won't be a problem anymore?
  2. What are the exact requirements to work in the UK after you have your speciality (from the EU)? I guess it is the CESR route, however I don't know whether there is some advantage based on the fact that your license is from the EU. Beside the optional MRCPsych and I guess a set IELTS score and submitting a heavy load of evidence regarding your experience/skills (based on this) what other requirements/recommended certificates/trainings/exams are there?
  3. Is there anybody you know who was in a similar situation like I am right now? For example a fresh CAP specialist from Germany who emigrated to the UK?

Thank you for any insights, tips.
