Jesus and mushrooms
Post Body

I’m a middle-aged man who calls himself a Christian. I began to follow Jesus over 20 years ago after living the first half of my life with no consistent spiritual direction or beliefs. Over the past year or so I’ve come to believe God may be calling me to begin healing and growing with the help of psilocybin.

Are there any other Christ-followers who have felt called into this weird land of counter-cultural spirituality that includes psychedelics?

I learned about an organization called Ligare that is led by a minister who was a participant in the John’s Hopkins study. They seem to be pioneers in this intersection of Christian faith and psychedelics, at least in the postmodern era. But their resources are scant.

One concern of mine is taking psilocybin without a guide. Ideally, I would find a guide who can relate to a Christian understanding of the universe but I’m in the south in the US and the whole notion of a Christian taking psychedelics is alien and taboo so I don’t imagine there are many options. Frankly, I think I can handle an experience without a guide, but I know integration after a trip is important.

Are there any resources available for taking mushrooms solo? Perhaps a workbook or set of materials that can help prepare for and then process the experience?

Another concern - and this may seem strange - is what music to listen to during the trip. It seems like many of the playlists out there on Spotify, etc. are new age, spiritual music that I would be concerned might not align with my goals, specifically to seek the will and face of God in Christ. I should add that I am not averse to non-Christian music (right now I have Pink Floyd Meddlel on repeat in my car.) I just don’t want to be distracted by anxiety of anticipating music that might not be what I need to fill my senses with.

In preparation for this, I have begun weaning myself off of Prozac, which I have been on for over 15 years, because I know the effects of psilocybin are tempered by SSRIs and because I am wanting healing, not just symptom management.

Are there any friends here who have waded into these questions already? I could use your friendship! My experience with this group so far has been full of grace, compassion, and acceptance of all kinds of people and backgrounds and journeys.

Also, have any of you seen, experienced, or met Jesus or experienced the Holy Spirit while on mushrooms? If so, I would love to hear your story.

Thanks!

Fellow Christian here ... Wife and I occasionally do x, LSD, and shrooms a little less. We call these events "marriage and intimacy" therapy, since we only take them for "intimate" time every few months.

I've tried to justify our actions through the lens of Scripture and try to figure out if doing drugs is sinful. A couple of things pop up constantly: --- Paul talks about being of a sober mind: I think this is related to addiction or a constant state of drunkenness, since wine was enjoyed during those days for more than a medicinal purposes, but the Bible constant warns of overdoing it. ---- Divination and sorcery: mainly Old Testament warnings, but very applicable today. Don't mess with spiritual forces, don't play, don't summon, don't engage with anything spiritual ... You don't know what you are doing to get, and malevolent spirits are deceiving spirits.

If Jesus or the Holy Spirit present themselves in a vision, use extreme caution and weigh your experience with what Scripture says. In other words, compare what they say vs what their nature is according to the Bible.

I acknowledge that I'm walking on a thin line, but up to this point I have not been convicted of wrongdoing by the Holy Spirit. We pray for divine protection before we partake.

As far as music? We listen to EDM, since we liked to be in a joyful environment.

Hope this helps,

God bless
