Over the past few days our legislature passed a piece of legislation regarding medical marijuana. Our Governor recently signed the bill. It will become effective in the near future.
The bill does not allow for bud form Marijuana as a means of treatment. The state government is regulating it and it will only be available in PILL FORM for 'SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITIONS'.
With that being said, my agency has 4 Narcotic Patrol dogs that are obviously trained on Marijuana.. many of our handlers here in the state are worried about our K9s becoming useless due to this being passed.
Does anyone have experience with this certain scenario?
Is there a method or means of conducting a K9 sniff with an occupant or driver in possession of a medical card who denies consent for a vehicle search?
If you have experience with something similar, what was done with your agency K9s or the K9s throughout the state?
Do you have a policy covering this specific scenario?
I appreciate any feedback.
