Menswear challenges on Project Runway - Discussion and list
Post Body

I've always been so curious as to why menswear isn't attempted on Project Runway more often. I'd guess the main reason is that the producers know that women are their target audience and they're just catering to their audience. It could also be that menswear requires really precise tailoring, something which isn't really possible in a one or two day challenge. Maybe as far as casting it's also just way more difficult to find designers who can create clothes for both men and women.

What do you guys think? Do you enjoy the menswear challenges? Do you have a favorite challenge or winning look?

Here are all of the challenges I can remember that involve menswear. Please let me know if there are others I'm not aware of!

Season 2, Episode 10 -- The designers had to create outfits for each other, which meant that Chloe created menswear for Nick, Nick created menswear for Daniel V., and Kara created menswear for Santino.

Season 3, Episode 8 -- The designers had to create looks for themselves to wear on a long flight, which meant that Jeffrey, Vincent, and Kayne had to make outfits for themselves.

Season 4, Episode 3 -- Probably the only true menswear challenge the show has ever had. The designers had to create looks for Tiki Barber to wear on The Today Show. A lot of the looks were complete failures but a handful were great.

Season 9, Episode 9 -- The designers had to create menswear looks for the band The Sheepdogs. Most of the looks were pretty terrible.

Season 10, Episode 11 -- This one only halfway counts because the designers had to create baby clothes for boys and girls.

Season 11, Episode 2 -- The designers had to create male and female uniforms for the employees of SPiN, a ping pong club opened up by Susan Sarandon. The most notable design from this episode was a kilt and tank top look prominently displaying the club's slogan, "Balls are my business."

Season 11, Episode 8 -- The designers had to create tear-away men's clothing for The Thunder Down Under. This is another menswear challenge that was somewhat of a disaster. I think the challenge was doomed from the beginning, as many of the designers were unfamiliar with menswear, had to work on men with extremely exaggerated muscles, and also had to create clothing that could be torn off, which is very difficult.

All Stars, Season 2, Episode 5 -- The designers had to create androgynous looks that could work on both female models and male models. Emilio excelled at this challenge but most of the others fell flat.

All Stars, Season 3, Episode 5 -- The designers had to create a 1930s-inspired look for a male and female pair. Jeffrey's menswear look made him the winner of this challenge.

All Stars, Season 4, Episode 7 -- The designers had to create looks for couples about to go on their first date. There was a male-male couple in addition to female-male couples, which led to Fabio and Jay winning the challenge. This episode has probably the most finished, wearable menswear of any Project Runway challenge.
