Custom meta boxes vs plugin

Hi guys,
I'm new to developing in wordpress and I am trying to set up some custom fields for a specific page template.
I've been researching how to set up everything in functions.php but ended up with spaghetti code which I'm afraid might break at some point.
Is it better to just give up and use a plugin for this?
