Why did Cody Christian/Mike never appear in season 3?

was looking back on wikia and I realize Mike was completely absent from season 3. Anyone know why or have any rumors why he was omitted from season 3? I'm pretty sure too he was an important character towards the end of season 2, and BAM. Disappeared and is only mentioned in season 3 about how he's at lacrosse (?) practice.
Very weird.
