Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States, passed on this day in 2004. Reagan was the first of two Presidents to pass during the term of George W. Bush.
The State funeral for President Reagan lasted for seven days, beginning in his home state of California, then traveling to Washington, D.C. for a public service. All living former Presidents, including Gerald Ford (who would pass in December of that year) participated in the ceremonies. President George W. Bush declared June 11, 2004 a national day of mourning. However, the officially observed mourning period would last from June 5, 2004-July 3, 2004.
Upon the conclusion of the funeral services in Washington, D.C., President Reagan’s body was returned to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California where he was finally laid to rest. The President would be followed by former First Lady Nancy Reagan upon her passing in 2016.
President Reagan’s funeral was the largest for a President since President John F. Kennedy. Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis attended.
