Sargent Pushed Strongly for More Civil Service Reform but Stuggled with a Split Congress for the first two years. Sargent also pushed for Women's Rights but failed to achieve any thing in this regard.

Sargent was a supporter of silver and pushed Eastern Republicans into supporting his postion while in exchange rarely using his veto against them.

Sargent was also hesitant during his term to lower tarrifs.

Sargent like Garfield favoured intervention in regards to the South after Unsuccessfully attempting to purchase Arkansas from the south and reclaim Massachusetts from New England. This Idealistic Postions caused Sargent to lose support as a non intervention wing in the Republican Party grew.
