Post Body

Febuary 8th 1881 the 20 year anniversary of the birth of the Confederacy and also noted for the start of the Confederate Civil War

Maxey Rising Previously 4th President Samuel Maxey a '2nd confederationist' had had a turbulent presidency civil uprising by the few free blacks( all blacks free before civil war in the south were guaranteed freedom), tensions with the north and a struggling economy on the horizon. Maxey lost the popular vote and narrowly won the electoral college it didn't help that the Democrats managed to take both Chambers. Many calling Maxey a 'sham'.

The Convention Maxey wanted one thing a free Texas and after attempting to pass Seccession bills through congress (all being voted no on by a 2/3rds majority) Maxey issued a executive order declaring the confederation of Texas and later resigned from the presidency of the CSA. Texas Miltia's were formed to fight for independence.

Retaliation The Confederate army was raised by new president Wade Hampton III who called this Texan enclave a mirage and called all loyal sons to defend the confederation.

All of Texas with parts of Western Louisana agreed to Join a Texan Confederation focused on Four things: A free Texan Republic beholden to no one Membership on the American Commenwealth Salvery permitted Western expansion and into mexico( In Order for the CSA to gain independence they had to forfeit rights to expand)

President Hampton declared a state of emergency and officially with support of Congress declared war on this' rebellion'

Outside Players New England vowed neutrality but both party leaders on the middle of a election claimed they would welcome either result of the war.

Garfield announced neutrality also that would change however after his assassination. Aaron Sargent would ascend to the President office as the 19th president and declare war on the CSA for the reclamation of Tennessee,(The state had pro unity sentiment and a illegal referendum)

Progress By January 1882 things had Changed Maxey's rebellion was on the verge of collapse, but The CSA had lost Tennessee and were barely holding the front with the union, The union under pressure also from other world powers and there neighbours in New England whose Expedtion forces had been called up in favour of a campaign to take New York.

The Finale In March with fighting dwindling down a treaty was hammered out between the union and CSA, New England were mediators( Texas had collapsed at this point)

The Treaty stated: Tennessee would be returned to the Union The CSA would lose its claim on virginia for 25 years The CSA would be allowed to expand into Mexico and the carriers The CSA would join the American Commenwealth The union would pay war reparations The Texan Confederacy would be abolished. Thus when this treaty was signed it brought a end to the War(Maxey was imprisoned for life, a verdict declared in what many called a 'show trial'

A question of a Constitutional Nature CSA President Hampton now faced a Constitutional Challenge in '85 the term would be up. And since presidents were limited to a single term Maxey would be disqualified. But he argued that he would contest the election of '85 under a new center right Party the Constitutionalist Party. The Supreme Court stepped in arguing that Hampton could one run for a single 6 year term but ordered that whatever administration occurred that succession rules and inherited terms be Sorted Out.
