Hello all!
So here are the basic items you need to know before I start my questions.
1) Single Powerwall 2 with a partial load back up (ie AC and the 240v 50 AMP NEMA 14-50 located in my garage is NOT backed up) 2) 3.78 kW solar system on my roof.
I am planning on getting an EV soon, and since I have a single Powerwall, I’ve got some questions and wanted to know what other who have a similar setup have been doing and their experience. I am not a EV virgin, I’ve had the VW eGolf, but I am perplex as to what to do now that I have a Powerwall. The EV I plan to get has more than 200 mile range, and my weekly average is anywhere from 40-50 miles a week, with the occasional further drives here and there. (Which if I went somewhere like 50-60 miles one way, I would probably seek out a public charger since I will most likely be at that location for an extended period and or do a DC charge on the way home)
(Please note, telling me I’m poor and that I should have ordered 9 Powerwall 2’s and a 10 mW solar system...is not the answer)
Question/Option 1: Since the Powerwall 2 has a max sustained load of 5 kW, would I be better off “throttling” my planned EV/EVSE to a lower rate so as to not trip the internal safety of the Powerwall? (Say 1 or 2 kW) Because the max charge for a 50 AMP breaker (given the 80% rule) will be around 9.6 kw.
Question 2/Option 2: Would I be better off just taking the Powerwall to backup mode and let the EV charge from the grid at its max available speed when power is the cheapest late at night. I’m leaning towards this solution because I know I don’t have much juice to play with in the powerwall and lets say I’ve used 20 kWh of the battery in the EV, my Powerwall is going to drain fairly quickly, and I’ll have power for an outage/turn it back to self powered when the car is full.
Question 3: Lets say I charge during the day when I have solar. What could I do to say, make sure that I’m using most of my solar production to charge the car?
Option 4: Just charge it off a 110v outlet for 10-12 hours overnight every night and get the range that I get with it.
Also anyone with an EV and a single Powerwall, do you charge every night or do you charge here and there?
Thanks!
