My grandson asked if he could do two pottery entries for the county fair, and it seemed that raw glazing terracotta would be perfect for that.

He wanted to make a dinosaur and a bowl for his entries. He's worked in the studio lots before, mostly with stoneware clays, and the long process of making/drying/firing/glazing/firing. For a seven year old, the couple of weeks or more for that process is an eternity.

He loved the waxy texture of the terracotta. I made a dinosaur along with him to demonstrate without touching his project. Same with the pinch bowl. Then he could immediately paint them with low fire glazes. There was only a small selection of Mayco stroke and coat colors, so he used them all.

His project dried as quickly possible, and just finished firing it. He gave me permission to photograph them for this post. They will be entered into his county's fair tomorrow.

Because of this success, I might volunteer to do a similar activity for his 4H cloverbud group- they are always asking, and it seems doable since with raw glazing it could all be made in one sitting, then fired and be done for the next meeting two weeks later.

Anyway, this is really just showing off my talented grandson. :) His T-rex is on the left, and pinch bowl on the right. Tiny things he made to go with his action figures between.
