Has anyone got some tips for measuring coefficient of thermal expansion?

Post Body

I've been working with a fairly strange blend of clay of my own making and I'm having a heck of a time getting commercial glaze to not craze on it. I think my clay body has a fairly low CTE.

Has anyone tried direct measurement of CTE? I'm thinking of heating up a test piece to around 400C to see if I could directly measure CTE (quickly!) so I could have some starting point to start figuring out my own glaze formulations to fit.

Is the usual approach to do a bunch of test tiles of varying glaze compositions to see where crazing begins then towards shivering?
