Rank-and-file was a dead tactic, despite what the MacDonald officers insisted that it kept men organized and efficient, it just didn’t hold up against the fiery mess of modern artillery and machine guns. However, tradition was key in the Estate, so instead of requesting some kind of reconsideration of planning, the soldiers simply didn’t follow orders and fought like how they thought they should fight. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t, but it certainly lost fewer lives than rank-and-file.
Thousands of new soldiers lined the streets of Achnacarry and Tioram in rank-and-file, ready more than ever to defend their precious homeland after hearing of the unlawful occupation of Blackpark at the hands of the dastardly, godless Republicans. For once in the Highlands, there was a justification to fight to the last breath, even if that breath was unorganized and inefficient according to the Trìgà idheil.
